Sperm Test
The sperm test, defined as a spermiogram, is a laboratory test to measure the amount and quality of healthy sperm cells in the semen. The motile sperm cells in the semen are analyzed with the help of this test, and the male's reproductive potential is evaluated. The sperm test is applied when couples want to have children and have regular and unprotected sexual intercourse for a year without achieved pregnancy. Thus, the presence and amount of motile and healthy sperm cells are analyzed.
Advantages of Sperm DNA Damage Test
Sperm DNA damage, beyond routine sperm sample evaluation, provides a reliable analysis that can help to identify whether a healthy pregnancy can occur. This information is helpful in the clinical diagnosis and treatment of male infertility.
Sperm DNA Fragmentation Test is Being Suggested to Who?
● Cases of Unexplained Infertility,
● Couples with slow embryo development,
● Patients with abnormal embryo development,
● Recurrent IVF/ICSI failure,
● Recurrent Pregnancy Loss
● Patients with especially oligoasthenoteratozoospermia and severe teratozoospermia in the spermiogram.
Causes of Sperm DNA Damage:
In men, the most important factor of sperm DNA damage is oxidative stress. A low degree of hydrogen peroxide is required for sperm production in normal oxidative metabolism. Moreover, within the normal range, ROS is necessary for sperm capacitation and fertilization.
The measurement of ROS and DNA damage in male subfertility and its clinical effect is an issue that increases the success of assisted reproductive treatment methods. Therefore, determining sperm DNA damage, seminal oxidative stress, and antioxidant levels is especially important for deciding on the assisted reproductive treatment methods.
Other Causes;
● Infection
● Fever
● High testicular temperature
● Recreational drug use
● Smoking
● Alcohol
● Excessive caffeine consumption
● Stress
● Diet
● Environmental and occupational pollution
● Advanced age
● Varicocele
● Leukocytospermia
● Chemotherapy and radiotherapy history
